USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue joined the Westmoreland County Food Bank Drive-Thru Distribution
In May, Westmoreland County Food Bank hosted a drive-thru distribution through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farmers to Families Program. The event was a huge success — serving MARC produce boxes, as well as Turner Dairy Farms dairy boxes to over 1000 households. In addition to the successful distribution, USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue was able to join for a press conference and volunteered his time distrusting the boxes to families in need. The event got several mentions in the media, including this story in the Post-Gazette.
Westmoreland County Food Bank Adjusts Distribution Process
In mid-March, Westmoreland County Food Bank made the decision to prepackage food in our warehouse for all 44 food pantries. Through this, each household would receive one box of non-perishable, one box of produce/refrigerated product/and one box of frozen product. The Food Bank decided that this was the most effective way to prepare agencies for safe low contact/drive through distributions.
Along with the new distributions, the food bank had more than 1,000 volunteers to help make boxes, fill boxes, and sort food that will go to an area food pantry to be given to a family in need.
