Why Voter Engagement?

Hunger in America impacts every single congressional district in the country, and the millions of people who are struggling with hunger have many barriers in front of them that may discourage them from participating in the voting process. People struggling with hunger are less likely to vote for multiple reasons, including lacking information about the process, having to constantly move for employment and housing reasons, and complicated voter registration rules. Political campaigns place little emphasis on engaging the people we serve to vote because they are not frequent voters, further discouraging individuals struggling with hunger from participating in the electoral process.

Feeding Pennsylvania and our network of 9 food banks and 2,700 partner pantries and meal sites strive to build relationships with our neighbors in communities across the country – ensuring that we are helping through their hardest times. Our network of food banks touches college campuses to veteran centers across the country. We are their trusted partners in many parts of life, and we believe we have an opportunity to empower people in this important process of voting. We know we can help our neighbors in need get the information on why, how, and when to vote.

What is National Voter Registration Day?

National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. First observed in 2012, it has quickly gained momentum ever since. Nearly 3 million voters have registered to vote on the holiday to date.

National Voter Registration Day was created to make sure everyone has the opportunity to vote. On Tuesday, September 22, 2020 – volunteers and organizations from all over the country will “hit the streets” in a single day of coordinated field, technology, and media efforts. National Voter Registration Day seeks to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.

Everyone can be part of our effort and help us achieve our goal of making this year’s National Voter Registration Day the biggest one ever. Learn more here about how to register yourself, your community, and get #VoteReady ahead of November.

How to Get #VoteReady

Voter registration is more important than ever as states shift policies to respond to COVID-19. At the same time, social distancing prevents many voters from getting registered in their communities, at DMVs, and more.
