Feeding Pennsylvania Joins Other Non-Profits to Discuss Community Needs in Light of the COVID-19 Pandemic
Pennsylvania – (April 20, 2020) – On Thursday, April 16, 2020, Jane Clements-Smith, Executive Director of Feeding Pennsylvania, spoke about what the organization is doing to combat food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion was broadcasted during a live webinar organized by the Think About Energy Briefing series.
Prior to the COVID-19 crisis, Feeding Pennsylvania was delivering 164 million pounds of food every year. Due to the rising unemployment rates, the organization is facing a massive increase in food insecurity needs. Clements-Smith shared information on what the organization is doing to keep up with the demand and how they’re working with various government agencies.
Access to food is their primary concern. Food manufacturers are struggling to keep up with the demand from local stores, making it increasingly difficult for Feeding Pennsylvania to get donations or even make their own food purchases.
“Under Feeding Pennsylvania, we have a produce cooperative that works with Pennsylvania growers, and during this COVID-19 crisis, we’ve moved to taking the produce that would typically go to a large distribution center, and we’ve created 50-pound boxes of produce that a family can take home,” said Clements-Smith.
Other organizations that participated in the webinar included Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Commonwealth Charitable Management, Education Partnership, and Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern PA.
The full webinar is available here, and the food insecurity segment which, includes Feeding Pennsylvania, the Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank, and the Central Pennsylvania Food Banks, can be found here.
