PA Agriculture Spotlight: Hillandale Farms

Hillandale Farms is a family-owned and operated egg company which strives to deliver the freshest, highest quality eggs to their communities in a sustainable manner. Pennsylvania’s statewide network of food banks works with Hillandale at all three of their locations in the Commonwealth: Corry (Erie County), New Kensington (Westmoreland County), and Gettysburg (Adams County). Many of our food banks work with Hillandale as one of their PASS and LFPA egg providers to help source local, Pennsylvania eggs for charitable distribution.

Gary Rex, Hillandale’s Senior Account Manager, shared, “We value our work with the food banks in Pennsylvania and we strive to make it a mutually beneficial partnership. We work together to get them the products they need on a regular basis, but they’ve also been helpful for Hillandale, including providing a market for our small and medium eggs. These eggs come from younger birds and we’re able to provide them to the food banks at a slightly lower cost so we can move the inventory, and they can serve more neighbors high quality, local protein using PASS and LFPA dollars.”

Hillandale also strives to be environmentally conscious while supporting local producers throughout the Commonwealth. The company works with locally contracted egg farms in Pennsylvania to produce millions of dozens of eggs annually, and they work with additional farms to hatch chicks which the company will eventually raise for egg production. Hillandale also purchases locally grown and harvested grains to use for feed for their chicks. The grain is delivered to their in-house feed mill for processing – supporting another sector of Pennsylvania agriculture in addition to poultry.

“We value our relationships with agricultural producers throughout Pennsylvania as they support various areas of our business,” Rex continued. “Working with local producers supports our efforts for sustainability and energy efficiency at Hillandale. We keep our farms as close to our customers as possible to reduce our carbon footprint and transportation requirements. Our three locations allow us to easily service all of our food bank partners and support our partner farms throughout the Keystone state.”
